Josh Hazlewood, the fast bowler for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), has opted out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2021 due to frequent "bubbles and quarantines" over the last year or so. The speedster made his IPL debut in 2020, appearing in three games and taking just one wicket. In December of this year, MS Dhoni and his team bought him for INR 2 crore.

The 30-year-old is currently a member of the New South Wales set up in Australia's domestic one-day competition, having played in all three formats during India's Australia tour. Considering his workload in the coming months, Hazlewood, born in Tamworth, chose to withdraw from the IPL 2021 to spend more time with his family.

CSK's fast-bowling department includes Shardul Thakur, Lungi Ngidi, Deepak Chahar, Sam Curran, and Dwayne Bravo, though Hazlewood will not be among them. The Super Kings will play the Delhi Capitals (DC), led by Rishabh Pant, in their first game on April 10 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

CSK struggled to qualify for the IPL playoffs the previous season and were eliminated after a series of defeats in the first round. Apart from Hazlewood, Josh Philippe of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Mitchell Marsh of the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have also withdrawn from the tournament.
