There will be plenty of money spent, and players shuffled ahead of the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), which a mega-auction will precede. The main auction for the 2022 tournament, a ten-team event thanks to the addition of two new clubs in Lucknow and Ahmedabad, is expected to take place in December or January, with the BCCI still to release the details.

However, existing franchises are expected to be allowed to keep up to four players. In comparison, the two new franchises will select three players through a player draft system, which was last held in 2016 when the Rising Pune Supergiants and Gujarat Lions replaced the Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, who were suspended following the 2013 IPL corruption scandal.

The BCCI has notified existing franchises that they can keep three Indian players and one international player, or two Indians and as many overseas players as they like. Furthermore, there will be no Right-to-Match cards available at the upcoming auction (RTM).

After the existing eight clubs determine which players to keep and which to release into the auction pool, the two new teams will use the players' drafting method to select three players - most likely two Indians and one overseas. Lucknow is expected to be given priority because it was the most significant bidder at the auction.

The BCCI is considering the retention cost for each of these players, including those who will be kept. Meanwhile, it will be up to the individual player to decide whether they want to be kept or go into the auction pool, and their permission will be requested before signing.

The BCCI has yet to decide on how much a franchise can spend on each retained player. Each team received an INR 80 crore purse during the 2018 mega-auction, with the maximum amount spent on retained players set at INR 33 crore.

Given the enormity of the upcoming auction, it's believed that many players are eager to be released by their teams to increase their chances of earning more money. Each team's auction prize pool is expected to reach INR 90 crore.
