Actor Urmila Matondkar joined the Shiv Sena in the presence of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray
of Maharashtra on Tuesday. Welcoming her to the crowd, Rashmi, the wife of Thackeray, tied
Shivbandhan to Urmila's hand.
Matondkar has already been nominated to the State Legislative Council by the Sena, under the Governor's quota.
Matondkar, who contested Mumbai North's Lok Sabha election last year on a Congressional ticket, lost the seat to Gopal Shetty of the BJP. She later left Congress, claiming "her efforts to work for the betterment of the party did not find support."
Matondkar had protested to Congress' high command in a "classified" letter that individual party leaders who did not assist her in the 2019 polls were rewarded with new positions. The letter was leaked to the media, which forced her to resign in September 2019 in a huff.
While in Maharashtra, the Sena and Congress are in an alliance, Congress does not seem to be upset about its ally nominating the actor for the seat of the legislative council. She allegedly agreed to the Sena bid after being called up by CM Uddhav Thackeray himself.
Insiders from Sena say the sagacity and upfront approach of Matondkar in the row appealed to the group, which agreed to field her for the seat of the council.
Matondkar has kept a low profile for almost a year following his departure from Congress. Recently, Matondkar took on fellow actor Kangana Ranaut, who equated "Pakistan Occupied Kashmir" with Mumbai and targeted the chief minister.
