Tran Thi Kim Thia, also known as Sau Thia, was born into a low-income family and grew up in Tien Giang province's Go Cong Dong area. She moved to Hung Thanh commune in Thap Muoi district, Dong Thap province, at 34, after both of her parents died early.

Sau Thia lives alone, unmarried and without children. She used to take a job selling lottery tickets and peeling cashews when she was younger. She would have VND200,000 if she could sell 200 tickets per day. She received an additional VND400 for each kilogram of peeled cashew.

She was asked to take over the activities of the women's union in the 1980s and 1990s. Later, she worked as a collaborator in the Red Cross' population planning program.

She became a trainer in 2002 when the Hung Thanh commune localities initiated a mission to make swimming universal for youngsters.

The new task heightened her anxiety. She organized two groups of seven youngsters each in the first year. In succeeding years, the number rose to 50-60.

After practising with Thia, some children who had struggled in previous lessons were able to swim successfully.

Parents entrusted their children to Thia because they loved her.

She became gravely ill in the year 2020. She averted death because she was rushed to the hospital. As a result, she ceased to sell tickets. She now devotes the majority of her time to teaching children to swim. She does 2-3 training shifts with youngsters every day.

Nearly 4,000 children in Dong Thap Muoi have learned to swim in the last 19 years of free-swimming instruction.

Locals no longer felt Thia had done "a strange thing" once local authorities and tales about her identified her were published in newspapers several years later.

She was named one of the 100 most inspirational women in the world by the British BBC in 2017 due to her quiet but significant achievements.

Sau Thia won the KOVA Award in the category of Beautiful Living in 2018. The President awarded her the Third Class Labor Medal in 2020.

She has been named one of Forbes Vietnam's 20 inspirational women for 2021.

Thia stands out among the other 19 females on the list. She lacks power, a high social status, and a high level of knowledge. Her efforts, on the other hand, are substantial in the community. Thousands of children have learned to swim as a result of her efforts.
